“Eternal Light”

Our first programme in the 2014 - 2015 season will feature two contrasting settings of the Requiem. Howard Goodall was born in Bromley in 1958, and his setting, Eternal Light: A Requiem, was commissioned by London Musici to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It was commissioned as both a choral-orchestral-dance piece for London Musici, The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Rambert Dance Companyand as a choral-orchestral work. Goodall uses some of the traditional text of the Latin Requiem Mass, with settings of poems. Johannes Brahms, in his ‘Ein deutsches Requiem’, departed completely from the Latin text and instead used texts from the Bible such as ‘Blessed are they that mourn’, or the incredibly beautiful setting of ‘How lovely are thy dwellings’. We shall be performing the version which Brahms himself made for two pianos, and we lucky to have obtained the services of three excellent soloists, Soraya Mafi (soprano), Greg Tassell (tenor) and Marc Callahan (baritone).
